One of the longest running and most prestigious film festivals in the States, the New York Film Festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1963 by writer Richard Roud and and curator/enthusiast Amos Vogel, NYFF began with a focus on European auteurs, before expanding its interests internationally. This year's schedule is packed with premieres, Q&As, and opportunities to see some of the most talked about movies of the festival season.
NYFF is known for being a non-competitive festival, with its signature Main Slate of 25-30 feature films and documentaries, alongside categories entitled Currents, highlight "new and innovative" voices, and Spotlight, which showcases "the season's most anticipated and significant films."
"If there is one takeaway from this year's Main Slate, it is cinema's limitless capacity for renewal," says festival artistic director Dennis Lim. "Collectively, the films in the program suggest that this renewal takes many forms: breathtaking debuts, veterans pulling off new tricks, filmmakers of all stripes seeking new and surprising forms of expression and representation. We love the range and eclecticism of this group of films and are excited to share it with audiences."

When and where is this year's festival?
New York Film Festival 2022 runs from September 30th to October 16th, with screenings at Film at Lincoln Center, NYFF's home theater, as well as in all five boroughs of New York City as part of the festival's 60th-anniversary celebration. Each venue will present a selection of films throughout the festival.
How is NYFF celebrating 60 years?
In addition to appearing as a Main Slate selection, James Gray's Armageddon Time has been chosen a special 60th anniversary screening event, with the filmmaker and cast members Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Banks Repeta and Jaylin Webb appearing for a Q&A. The film is a fitting choice for the festival, as it centers around a young boy coming of age in Queens in the 1980s.
As for NYFF's expansion into all five boroughs with, participating theaters include Alamo Drafthouse in Staten Island, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem, and the Museum of Moving Image in Queens.
What else is being screened at NYFF?
The festival has a stacked lineup this year, including U.S. premieres for films like Saint Omer, Stars At Noon, and White Noise (which is the opening night film), along with the documentaries Is That Black Enough for You?!? and the Venice-winning All the Beauty and the Bloodshed. Festival favorites such as Bones and All, The Eternal Daughter, TÁR, and Women Talking will also have their latest screenings at NYFF.
Many of the screenings also feature Q&As the filmmaker and cast, including She Said and Till, two films making their world premieres at the festival, as well NYFF's closing night film, The Inspection, and Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi's Personality Crisis: One Night Only.

In addition to new titles, this year's Revivals slate includes new restorations and preservations of Claire Denis' No Fear No Die, Jean Eustache's The Mother and the Whore, and Edward Yang's A Confucian Confusion, among others .
"The Revivals section continues to look beyond acknowledged and revered classics, and to challenge the conventions of the canon,” says senior programming director Florence Almozini. "This year’s lineup proves once again that even relatively recent decades are full of potential cinematic discoveries, by showcasing significant works from artists of diverse backgrounds and origins in striking new restorations."
