Barbenheimer came, it saw, it conquered. The simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer broke box office records to the tune of a combined $1 billion worldwide. (Even the legendary Francis Ford Coppola called Barbenheimer "a victory for cinema.") What's better, it was a true cultural event, with moviegoers flocking to theaters in all pink and pork pie hats to celebrate the power of cinema.

But the summer movie season isn't over yet. August boasts a handful of new blockbusters (including the latest superhero offering from the DC universe) and more R-rated comedies starring the likes of Will Ferrell, Ayo Edebiri, and Sherry Cola. And with festival season approaching — the Venice Film Festival will kick off at the end of this month — the dog days of summer is also a perfect time to release breakouts from this year's Sundance and South by Southwest Film Festivals.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

The Heroes in a Half Shell first cowabunga-ed onto the big screen back in 1990 — in a live-action movie featuring turtle costumes by Jim Henson — and have returned a handful of time over the years. The latest iteration, the animated adventure Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, hails from producer Seth Rogen with a voice cast that includes Rose Byrne, Jackie Chan, Maya Rudolph, and John Cena. Two-time Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed the movie's score.

Passages

Writer-director Ira Sachs' latest stars Ben Whishaw and Franz Rogowski as husbands whose relationship is thrown into chaos when one of them begins an affair with a young woman (played by Blue is the Warmest Color's Adèle Exarchopoulos). The Paris-set romantic drama premiered during the Sundance Film Festival, and will now release in theaters in L.A. and New York unrated following the MPA's controversial decision to give Passages an NC-17 rating.

Meg 2: The Trench

Free Fire and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley takes the reigns for this sequel to 2018's The Meg. The first installment in the megalodon saga was an unexpected box office hit, and the second one is going even bigger: Jason Statham reprises his role as heroic deep sea diver Jonas Taylor to take on not one, but two megs. (For the uninitiated, the megalodon is a colossal, thought-to-be-extinct species of shark. Like Jaws on steroids.)

Shortcomings

Randall Park makes his feature directorial debut with this adaptation of Adrian Tomine's graphic novel, about a trio of thirtysomethings — struggling filmmaker Ben (Justin H. Min), his girlfriend Miko (Ally Maki), and his best friend Alice (Sherry Cola) — experiencing the complexities of modern relationships, identity, and culture. The indie dramedy's cast also includes Debby Ryan, Tavi Gevinson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jacob Batalon, and Timothy Simons.

Heart of Stone

Gal Gadot's future as Wonder Woman may be uncertain, but she's still finding plenty of other outlets to kick ass. Heart of Stone, a spy thriller conceived by The Old Guard creator Greg Rucka and directed by Tom Harper, casts Gadot as Rachel Stone, an elite secret agent who must save the world by recovering a valuable asset known as the Heart. If viewers take to this initial outing, Netflix hopes to turn the movie into its own franchise in the vein of The Bourne Identity and James Bond.

Red, White & Royal Blue

Casey McQuiston's bestselling novel is getting a big, gay rom-com adaptation courtesy of Tony Award-winning writer-director Matthew López and producer Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon). Red, White & Royal Blue centers on American first son Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and British prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) as they give new meaning to foreign affairs. Oscar nominee Uma Thurman plays the president of the United States, what more could a queer heart hope for?

The Pod Generation

The Pod Generation stars Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Rachel and Alvy, a 22nd-century couple who decide to grow their baby in technologically-advanced artificial wombs. The darkly comedic sci-fi film comes from writer-director Sophie Barthes, and upon its debut at Sundance, won the 2023 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, an award chosen by a jury of film and science professionals and presented to a film focused on science or technology.

Blue Beetle

One of the final holdovers from DC's cinematic universe before James Gunn took over, Blue Beetle marks the superhero's first-ever appearance on the big screen. So, what's Blue Beetle's deal? Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a down-on-his-luck recent college grad who inherits super, albeit unpredictable, powers thanks to a bit of ancient alien biotechnology. Damián Alcázar, Harvey Guillén and George Lopez co-star, with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon as the movie's villain, Victoria Kord.

Strays

Twenty-twenty-three is officially the summer of the R-rated comedy. Need proof? Look no further than this talking-animal movie where everything the animals say is profane. Will Ferrell voices a stray dog named Reggie, who vows revenge on his no-good former owner (Will Forte). Oscar winner Jamie Foxx lends his voice to a street-wise Boston Terrier, Bug, with a cast that also includes Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Josh Gad and Harvey Guillén. Josh Greenbaum, helmer of 2021's Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, directs from a screenplay by Dan Perrault.

Bottoms

Bottoms reunites writer and director Emma Seligman with her Shiva Baby star Rachel Sennott, who now also serves as co-writer. A queer spin on the teen sex comedy, the R-rated comedy centers on two high school outcasts (Sennott and Ayo Edebiri) who start a fight club in order to hook up with cheerleaders. Bottoms' wonderfully random cast also includes Nicholas Galitzine, Kaia Gerber, and... Marshawn Lynch?!
