Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal are heading West by way of Spain for Pedro Almodóvar's upcoming Strange Way of Life, which the filmmaker has called his "answer to Brokeback Mountain."
Hawke and Pascal co-star in the 30-minute short film about two retired gunslingers who reunite after 20 years apart. With filming currently underway in Spain, Augustín Almodóvar, the director's brother and a producer on the film, shared photos of the actors from the set.
Based on the costumes, it looks like Hawke's character, Jake, had left the rough and tumble life behind, while Pascal's Silva appears slightly less distinguished. The images also show feature co-star Manu Ríos (Netflix's Elite) and the director's own Western wear, including a pink cowboy hat. The costumes were designed by Yves Saint Laurent designer Anthony Vaccarello, who is an associate producer of the film.
"There will be a showdown between them, but really the story is intimate," Almodóvar told Indiewire. The project is inspired by Amalia Rodrgues' fado song of the same name, which will appear in the film. "Those songs are all very sad," the director said. "That is how these two main characters live."
Augustín previously shared photos from pre-production, including these wonderful snapshots of Pascal and Hawke practicing their horse-riding skills under the watchful eye of their director.
In the same Indiewrite interview, Almodóvar revealed that he had been approached to direct Brokeback Mountain but ultimately turned the film down. "I think Ang Lee made a wonderful movie, but I never believed that they would give me complete freedom and independence to make what I wanted...I knew there was a limitation," he said. Brokeback Mountain would go on to earn eight Oscar nomination and win three awards.
Almodóvar is himself an Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, which he won in 2003 with Hable con ella (Talk to Her). He also earned a Best Director nomination for the film.
