Wonder, the charming 2017 family drama starring Jacob Tremblay as a boy with Treacher Collins syndrome who just wants to fit in at school and Julia Roberts as his supportive mother, is getting something of a spin-off sequel, prequel and companion piece in White Bird: A Wonder Story, starring Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson.

Based on the follow-up graphic novel by Wonder author R.J. Palacio, White Bird follows Julian (Bryce Gheisar), who has been expelled for bullying Auggie Pullman (Tremblay). His grandmother (Oscar winner Helen Mirren) decides to tell him a story from her childhood — when she was a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France, she was saved from certain death by her first love and his mother (played by Anderson).

"You forget many things in life, but you never forget kindness," Mirren's character says in the trailer. "Like love, it stays with you forever."

This Wonder Story is directed by Marc Forster, who felt inspired reading the White Bird graphic novel during the pandemic, telling People that he "hopes audiences leave the theater having a deeper understanding of how a single act of kindness — no matter how big or small, can change the course of a person's life."
