A new game is afoot in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and the first look at the sequel sees Daniel Craig's Detective Benoit Blanc interrogating a group of suspects that includes Oscar nominees Edward Norton, Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr.
Glass Onion is set on a private island in Greece owned by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Norton), who has invited his nearest and dearest for a luxurious getaway. But when someone turns up dead, Detective Blanc is called in to sleuth out whodunit. Though plot and character details are being kept under wraps, the first photo shows Norton and Craig squaring off at a dinner party with Madelyn Cline, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Hudson and Janelle Monáe.
Like 2019's Knives Out, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, Glass Onion comes via writer-director Rian Johnson. The filmmaker says he took inspiration from "tropical getaway murder mystery" movies like 1973's The Last of Sheila and 1982's Evil Under the Sun. As for the peculiar title, Johnson explains that it's an homage to the 1968 Beatles song of the same name.
"I'm always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death," he told Netflix's Tudum. "This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that's clear. I'll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word glass. 'There's got to be some good glass songs.' I was like, 'Oh, is it a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?' The first thing that came up, because I'm a huge Beatles fan, is 'Glass Onion.'"
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will premiere during this September's Toronto International Film Festival and open in theaters at a to-be-announced date before streaming on Netflix on December 23.
