It has been eight years since Oscar-nominated writer, producer and director Michael Mann released his last film — 2015's Blackhat — but he's back and going pedal to the metal with his newest offering, Ferrari.

The Ferrari family biopic stars two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story) as Italian race car driver-turned-automobile entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) as his wife, Laura. Set during the summer of 1957, the drama explores their professional and personal troubles — including the death of their son, Dino — against the backdrop of the Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy.

Mann directs from a script by Troy Kennedy Martin, based on Brock Yates' book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machines. In addition to Driver and Cruz, the cast includes Patrick Dempsey, Jack O'Connell and Shailene Woodley.

In a director's statement, Mann says, "Well before I shot Ferrari, I was able to walk through Enzo's rooms, see his diaries, learn his habits, wonder at the wallpaper in Laura's bedroom where she spent the last years of her life, quiz their doctor, meet Lina's niece, understand her manner and modernity, sit in Enzo's barbershop chair, walk the sidewalks and inhabit his neighborhood, where I also lived, explore the gleaming mechanicals inside a Lampredi V12 engine and the sculpture of '50s racecars and, most importantly, engage with Enzo's son, Piero, from whom I learned and absorbed so much. I've tried to make come alive passions and allure, Enzo's strafing wit, the devastation of losing a child, operatic tirades, emotional sanctuary, tragedy, a monumental wager on one race and a struggle to survive, all of which collided in four months of 1957."

Following its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Ferrari opens in theaters on Dec. 25. Watch the trailer below.
