Ryan Reynolds made his first onscreen appearance as Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (An appearance that has since been heavily retconned and mercilessly mocked by even Reynolds.) It's only fair then that Hugh Jackman make his final appearance as Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool 3.

The Merc with a Mouth himself announced that Jackman is coming out of superhero retirement for the Deadpool threequel, which will mark both characters' first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. "We've been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now," Reynolds says in the video.

"His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special," he continues. "We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It's been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. But we did have one idea."

"Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?" Reynolds asks as Jackman walks through the background of the shot. To which Jackman replies, "Yeah, sure, Ryan."

The video also reveals that Deadpool 3 will open in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.

Jackman first played Wolverine in 2000's X-Men, and eight movies later, played him for what was intended to be the last time in 2017's Logan. In addition to earning an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, that film famously killed off the clawed mutant. Which shouldn't be an issue now that we're in The Multiverse Saga. (Jackman's Logan co-star, Sir Patrick Stewart, recently reprised his role as Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.)

James Mangold, who directed Logan, took to Twitter following the announcement with a cheeky reminder of that aforementioned death via a GIF of Wolverine being impaled. Lest his intentions be misconstrued, in a follow-up tweet, the filmmaker wrote, "Everybody chill. Just kidding! I'm all good! Logan will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or worm hole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what maddness my dear friends @VancityReynolds and @RealHughJackman cook up!"

So, how exactly will Wolverine return in the MCU? Reynolds posted a second video (titled "Part Hugh") with Jackman to explain: "1) Timeline questions, 2) Logan canon 3) MCU FAQ 4) Whether we can do this all day or not"

Watch below, no spoiler warning needed.

Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy — continuing his "bromance of Hollywood proportions" with Reynolds following Free Guy and The Adam Project — from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind the first two Deadpool movies.
