Dakota Johnson may soon be tapping into a Spidey sense of her own, as the actress is reported to be in talks to play Marvel comic character Madame Web in Sony's upcoming film of the same name. It would mark the Spider-Verse's first female-fronted comic book movie.

First introduced into Spider-Man comics in the '80s, Cassandra Webb – aka Madame Web – is most often depicted as an elderly woman who was born blind and suffers from the neurological condition, myasthenia gravis. She's spent her life confined to a support system that just so happens to look like a spider web. As such, Madame Web has developed clairvoyance among other mutant psychic abilities.

Madame Web will be directed by S.J. Clarkson (Marvel's Jessica Jones and The Defenders) from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the writing duo behind the Jared Leto-starrer Morbius.

By all accounts, Tom Holland's Spider-Man will stay put in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Sony's universe of Spidey characters will keep growing with Morbius hitting theaters on April 1, followed by Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson set for January 13, 2023.

As for Johnson, the actress had a pair of new films debut at last month's Sundance Film Festival: the Audience Award-winning Cha Cha Real Smooth, which will debut on Apple TV+ sometime this year, and the Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne-directed Am I OK?
