For the third time in Cannes' 84-year history, a female filmmaker has taken the Palme d'Or: Justine Triet's legal drama Anatomy of a Fall won the prestigious prize at the 76th Cannes Film Festival; she follows Jane Campion for The Piano and Titane director Julia Ducournau, the latter of whom served on this this year's jury.
Jane Fonda presented the Palme d'Or during Saturday's closing ceremony. The evening's presenters also included actors Orlando Bloom, Anaïs Demoustier, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Song Kang-ho, and John C. Reilly (who led the Un Certain Regard jury), as well as directors Roger Corman and Quentin Tarantino.
This year's Cannes jury was chaired by last year's Palme d'Or winner and two-time Oscar nominee Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness) and included Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, director Maryam Touzani, actor Denis Ménochet, filmmaker Rungano Nyoni, actor Paul Dano, author Atiq Rahimi, filmmaker Damián Szifron and Ducournau.
"This is a film that everyone stands behind on the jury," Östlund said in a press conference of awarding Anatomy of a Fall. "These films created a collective experience. The Palme d’Or winner was an intense experience — it’s what cinema should be."
