Bottoms is here, it's queer, and a little bit surreal — get used to it. The R-rated teen comedy stars Rachel Sennott (the breakout star of Bodies Bodies Bodies) and Ayo Edebiri as PJ and Josie, best friends who accidentally start a fight club at their wackadoodle high school. The first rule of this fight club? Create a safe space... and then hook up with the cheerleaders.
Havana Rose Liu and Kaia Gerber play said would-be love interests, with Nicholas Galitzine as Jeff, the star quarterback and personification of toxic masculinity. Retired NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, who appeared as himself in this year's 80 for Brady, makes his proper film debut as the school's feminism teacher.
Sennott co-wrote the script with her Shiva Baby director, Emma Seligman. On that first film, Seligman told A.frame, she focused on "getting over imposter syndrome, putting on your director pants, and being like, 'I've got this' — and not letting my Canadian-ness or my womanhood tell me I'm not good enough." If the red band trailer for Bottoms is any indication, she's succeeded and then some.
Bottoms hits select theaters on Aug. 25, before expanding on Sept. 1. Watch the trailer below.
