A new hero will rise in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While the movie's first teaser paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and his Marvel counterpart, King T'Challa, the official trailer looks ahead to the impact his death has on the entire MCU.
The trailer opens with a shot of Queen Mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and Shuri (Letitia Wright) at a funeral ceremony honoring their departed king. With no Black Panther to serve as its protector, Wakanda soon faces a threat from the deep and must prepare to go to war with King Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and his underwater nation.
In the movie, Namor rules over Talocan, a the hidden undersea kingdom rooted in Mayan culture, which marks a departure from his comic book origins as the ruler of Atlantis. His pointy ears and winged sandals that allow him to fly, however, are straight from the pages of the comics. "Only the most broken people can be great leaders," Namor says in the trailer.
Wakanda Forever sees the return of a host of familiar faces, including Winston Duke as M'Baku, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, and Martin Freeman as Everett Ross. Michaela Coel, meanwhile, makes her MCU debut as Dora Milaje warrior Aneka, as does Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams aka Ironheart
The final shot in the trailer teases the debut of a new Black Panther, as a masked woman drops into a superhero pose, donning a suit with gold accents and facial adornments. Who is under the mask is a reveal saved for the movie itself.
Producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently discussed the decision to not recast T'Challa, telling Empire, "It just felt like it was much too soon to recast. Stan Lee always said that Marvel represents the world outside your window... The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan poured that into the story. The conversations were entirely about, yes, 'What do we do next?' And how could the legacy of Chadwick — and what he had done to help Wakanda and the Black Panther become these incredible, aspirational, iconic ideas — continue? That's what it was all about."
Wakanda Forever, which marks the culmination of Marvel's Phase Four, is directed by Ryan Coogler from a script he wrote with Joe Robert Cole. 2018's Black Panther earned seven Oscar nominations — making history as the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture — and won three.
