Something about all that time spent inside seems to have inspired some of our most lauded writer-directors to look inward, as evidenced by a spate of semi-autobiographical dramas that have mined the childhoods of Kenneth Branagh (last year's Belfast), Steven Spielberg (the forthcoming The Fabelmans), as well as James Gray, with his latest feature, Armageddon Time.

The latter filmmaker, who is perhaps better known for more grandiose fare like 2016's The Lost City of Z and 2019's Ad Astra, has crafted an intimate portrait of his upbringing in 1980s Queens and his family's pursuit of the American Dream, shot by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Darius Khondji (Evita).

Gray's surrogate here is 11-year-old Paul Graff (Banks Repeta), with Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong as his parents, Esther and Irving, and two-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins as his kindly grandfather. Jessica Chastain (a recent Oscar winner for The Eyes of Tammy Faye) makes an appearance in the movie — and in the movie's trailer — as Maryanne Trump.

Armageddon Time, which premiered during this year's Cannes Film Festival and recently screened at Telluride, opens in select theaters on Oct. 28. Watch the trailer below.
