The latest stop on the fall festival circuit is in L.A., where the American Film Institute's annual AFI Fest will screen more than one hundred titles across five days. This year's slate features world premieres, including a documentary from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rob Reiner, films starring Oscar-winning actors Julia Roberts and Anthony Hopkins, and a documentary on Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner Tyler Perry. As if that weren't enough of a draw, Greta Gerwig has programmed her very own screening series at the fest.

"Everyone on the AFI Fest team is proud to share this year's selection of outstanding films from around the world with the audiences of Los Angeles," said AFI Fest director Todd Hitchcock. "Cinema is truly a global language, and the diversity of screen artistry represented here will widen the horizons for all moviegoers."

The 37th edition of AFI Fest will take place Oct. 25 through Oct. 29 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Which films are screening at AFI Fest?

This year's AFI Fest opens with the world premiere of writer-director Sam Esmail's dystopian drama, Leave the World Behind, adapted from the novel by Rumaan Alam and starring Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali and four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke.

AFI Fest will also host the red carpet premieres of Bradley Cooper's Maestro, in which he stars as Leonard Bernstein, and the documentary Maxine's Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, followed by a conversation with directors Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz.

Who is this year's Guest Artistic Director?

Greta Gerwig, the three-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Lady Bird (2017), Little Women (2019), and this year's Barbie, is this year's guest artistic director and is responsible for programming a series of classic films to screen during AFI Fest.

"Greta Gerwig is devoted to cinema, and AFI is devoted to her," said AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale. "In 2010, she served on the Shorts Jury for AFI Fest — and across the years since then, AFI has been proud to celebrate Lady Bird and Little Women, and now we are honored to welcome her home as Guest Artistic Director."

Gerwig's selections include Bob Fosse's All That Jazz (1979), Vincente Minnelli's An American in Paris (1951), Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), and Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire (1987). Gerwig will be on hand to introduce A Matter of Life and Death and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.
