As is tradition, Telluride does not announce its lineup until the day before the festival begins. This year's milestone 50th Telluride Film Festival takes place over Labor Day weekend, running from August 31 to September 4 in the eponymous Colorado resort town, and so on Wednesday, the slate was unveiled, officially.
Last year's Telluride lineup included the world premiere of Sarah Polley's Oscar-winning Women Talking; now, the festival is following suit with world premieres from filmmakers Emerald Fennell, Alexander Payne, Andrew Haigh, and George C. Wolfe. Additionally, Telluride will host North American premieres of films out of Cannes (including the Palme d'Or-winning Anatomy of a Fall) and this week's Venice Film Festival (the Emma Stone-starrer Poor Things). The slate also boasts a special screening of Pedro Almodóvar's Strange Way of Life, a live performance by Jon Batiste following the screening of American Symphony, and an art installation by Agnès Varda.
Alongside its lineup, Telluride announces that filmmakers Yorgos Lanthimos, Alice Rohrwacher, and Wim Wenders will be honored with the festival's Silver Medallion Awards ("given to recognize an artist's significant contribution to the world of cinema").
"Fifty years is a long time to do anything. And while we might be a little biased, we feel the work that TFF does is pretty important," Telluride Film Festival director Julie Huntsinger said in a statement. "We take the charge of preserving the theatrical experience and promoting film seriously, but with necessary winks here and there. We're ecstatic to share a program we feel reflects so much of the past 50 years, naturally and organically, films old and new, which stand as a testament to our beloved co-founders Tom Luddy and Bill Pence who are no longer with us."
