"Visual effects create the magic that makes people want to go to the movies," George Lucas says in the trailer for Disney+'s Light & Magic. "Movies are special effects."
The six-part documentary series takes its name from Industrial Light & Magic, the special visual effects, animation and virtual production division of Lucasfilm behind not only Star Wars, but the Indiana Jones movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and more than 350 other film. The series will open the doors to ILM and introduce the geniuses behind the movie magic.
As advertised in the trailer, the effects house has won 16 Oscars, taking home Best Visual Effects for Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Return of the Jedi (1983), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Cocoon (1985), Innerspace (1987), Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Death Becomes Her (1992), Jurassic Park (1993), Forrest Gump (1994) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006).
ILM also recieved a Special Achievement in Visual Effects award for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Special Achievement in Virtual Reality for Alejandro G. Iñárritu's short film, Carne y Arena (2018).
The series is directed by four-time Oscar nominee Lawrence Kasdan (who is also the writer behind The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi and The Force Awakens, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark) and executive produced by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Justin Wilkes, Kasdan, Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan.
All six episodes of Light & Magic will be streaming on Disney+ on July 27. Watch the trailer below.
